Latest Update from Ted Holman

When Ted Holman of Automania first moved to Grants Pass in 1978, he was married, living off the grid, splitting wood, just had a kid, and decided that maybe a more structured life was in order.
"I borrowed money to open Automania Import Parts on Rogue River Hwy in 1980," Ted said. "In 1985, I took over the lease on the closed VW dealership and met Charlie Morrison, who owned the property. I owe him the world and miss him daily. So, after four years of renting from Charlie, I realized that I was not running a repair shop, parts store and sales business with 14 employees; I was in fact running a full time Nursery Day Care Center and it did not agree with me. I managed to sell the lease and got into selling cars and motorcycles."
As a lifelong fan of motorcycles, Ted was invited in 1990 to join Reg Pridmore's CLASS Motorcycle Safety Schools out of Santa Paula, California. "As an instructor, I am sharing skill sets with street riders on their own bikes in a track environment, working to make them smoother, safer riders, allowing them to gain confidence and control of their motorcycles," Ted said. "Our next event in Oregon is July 25-26 at Oregon Raceway Park. Go to their website, classrides.com, to see more."

In 2005 Ted decided to consign and sell motorcycles and "cars of interest" from his new storefront at 895 Gladiola Drive.
"I fell back to retail," he said, "but not just retail, this time, something that I loved—motorcycles! The past few years, a couple of cars have crept into the picture, but not car cars—cars that you are glad to see, interesting for one reason or another. When I walk into the shop each morning, it is like visiting a little museum here in the Rogue Valley. We do strictly consignment sales and only vehicles that are at least interesting to me, with very few exceptions. I work for my sellers, mostly folks who do not want to deal with the general public, do not have the patience or time or have had troubles before selling online. There have been estates, which can be sort of reflective for me—treasures of an individual that now must find new owners. It can be a difficult time for all concerned."
Automania is also shipping motorcycles and cars around the world. Ted recently sold a 2012 Honda Goldwing this summer that went to Libya, and a Ducati that went to Dubai.
"At least 60% of what we sell leaves Oregon," Ted said. "Some say I have a gift for story telling, and combined with the Internet this has been a perfect blend of marketing these bikes and cars. The story has to be there to be shared, but that is what I do, find the story and write it. Works pretty darn well. If it didn't, I would probably be splitting wood again!"
