The first time I saw this 1949 Harley-Davidson Pan Head, I knew it belonged at the shop. The upswept Pipes, Hard Tail rear end and that engine just hit the spot. In a sea of Harley’s for sale, this bike is an Island above the rest.
The bike has been with the owner since 1985. He is the third owner and met the first at bike show in Laughlin. That first owner was a Sherriff in Fresno and looking over the bike, he told the present owner that everything was pretty much stock except for the TT style Mufflers and the rear fender. 1949 was the first year of the Hydro Glide Front end and the Mouse Trap Transmission. The frame is stock, the Gas Tanks stock, everything but the parts listed previously. Obviously it has been painted but it is pretty much stock.
Over the years, the bike was mostly shown and has covered possibly 2,000 miles since ’85. The bike was recently serviced at a local Harley repair shop where the directive was to make the bike mechanically sound and road safe. From there, it was ridden to the shop for sale.
I was instructed on starting the bike. Pretty cool. Key off, retard the timing by twisting the distributor, pump the throttle twice, kick it over twice, pump the throttle once more, pull the choke on, turn on the ignition and kick. Started the first time. The mechanic that did the work said it pulled really strong and the brakes were unusually effective.
Miles are 20,591, but it should being almost 70 years old, there is no way to say they are correct. The VIN# is 49FL1366 and the selling price is $12,695.
