Before you read any further, I am prejudiced when it comes to RT’s and GS’s. It is my choice of a touring, traveling motorcycle being a BMW Twin, which goes back to 1971. There are other great motorcycles, great brands and these bikes are not perfect, but they hit all of the boxes for me.
Which comes to the 2016 BMW R1200RT with 4,745 miles from new sitting in our showroom. Holy moley, what a beautiful motorcycle and basically no miles! The bike features the newest family of water cooled engines from BMW putting out 125 hp through a wet clutch driven transmission. Even the base RT is a level higher than any other
With less than 5,000 miles on the bike, it is another moment where dreams of travel and time away from work were interrupted by reality. It happens on occasion, giving a chance to own a wonderful piece of equipment at a discounted price.
So why is the RT such a great bike, because it gives all of the comfort and utility of a touring motorcycle and retains the fun factor of riding. It is quick, tons of torque, fast to change direction and one of the safest fronts ends of any motorcycle built. I have hundreds of miles at the track on R1200RT’s, often two up, so I speak from experience. What a surprise to a lot of sport bikes!
And then there is the comfort, touring part of the package. Heated Seats, Heated Grips, Cruise Control, ABS Linked Brakes and Cruise Control. The bike is prewired for BMW’s GPS unit which can be controlled from the left bar with the thumb wheel. It is also ready for Sirius Radio. The Saddle Bags are big enough for two-up riding with a luggage rack for another bag or box. The owner of the bike opted for the quick release SW-Mototech Tank Bag and BAKUP passenger back rest. It is ready to travel.
