1978 BMW R100S

Price: $9,995 USD

Mileage: 18,103 U.S. miles
VIN#: 6163416

The first real motorcycle that sucked me into riding was a BMW Twin back in the 70’s and they are in my rear view mirror even to this day. Working at ZAP Motors in Portland the ultimate sleeper was the R90S which won the first AMA Championship in 1976 with Reg Pridmore. The whole shop bought them and stripped them of their badges, fairings and seats, making them look like grandpa’s R75. The terror that was spread through the State of Oregon by the swarm of R90’s pinned on 1,000 mile weekends seems a distant event, but the bike in it’s day set the standard for what was considered a hot rod bike long before Ducati’s and the Japanese over took the scene.

But they pumped all of the crankcase oil out of through the crankcase breather when they were run hard and the 1977 R100/7 was suppose to be the cure (sort of). The 1978 models changed from spoked wheels to mags the S models had just a bit more power. BMW also started cutting corners on finish and to the squared off valve covers. Most /6 owners never got over it. The softening had started.

Our 1978 R100S has had a hard look at what made the /6 a better bike while getting the advantage of the /7 mechanical upgrades. A lot of time, thinking and money were brought to the project and if you are at all familiar with /6 and /7 Twins, you will recognized the effort and parts looking over the images. Look again! Holy Toledo, it is wonderful.

First off are the Dellorto’s. Standard on R90’s, but replaced with Bings on the /7. 40mm’s! Behind them are the Dual Plugged Heads and behind them is the Frame Brace, welded tabs to the frame and bolted on for easy removal. On top of that are /6 Valve Covers instead of those ugly /7 square styled units. Stock Mufflers follow the headers, not some noisy aftermarket racket makers. The rear Shocks have no identification on them, but they are progressive and adjustable. BMW Twins were known to have issues keeping the fork tubes in line and the bike front end wears a beefy Billet Upper Triple Clamp Brace and a bridged Fork Brace at the front fender.

It would appear that the Frame was powder coated or painted as well as the Wheels and Luggage rack assembly. There is also the rear Luggage Rack, that I am not sure was stock, bolted to the back of the seat pan. Paint is excellent and has been pin stripped to match. The bike presents it’s self beautifully and tugs at the heart of any true BMW Twin lover.

Recent service work was completed at Hansen’s BMW and the invoices are shown with the images. The entire Brake System was overhauled, Master Brake Cylinders replaced or rebuilt as needed, Brake Lines replaced as well as the Rear Caliper. The Deep Oil Sump was resealed and all of the oils changed including the Fork Oil. The Alternator was inspected and brushes replaced and all of this to the tune of just over $2,700.

Our selling price is $9,995. The VIN # is 6163416. Miles showing are 18,103. Please come by and see at Automania LLC, 895 SE Gladiola Drive, Grants Pass, OR 97526. http://www.automaniagp.com 541 479 8888 Oregon Dealer DA1287.
