The first thing I thought about when we received this Civic Si to sell was Honda reliability. There are other hot hatches sold by Ford, GM, and Subaru, but stories of blown head gaskets seem to follow most of them after a couple of years. Honda’s just seem to keep running, so it was easier to imagine owning a “Sports Compact” with the “H” sitting on the front Grill. Maybe just it is Honda hype, but there are a lot of Subaru’s and Focus’s getting work done.
The plus on this car is the 6-Speed Manual Transmission and Limited Slip differential. Driving the car is a step back in how people use to enjoy cars, no “Tip-Tronic, F1, Dual Clutch” automatic nanny style of tranny, but an honest to goodness Manual Transmission that is great to use. Everyone should be required to know how to use a Manual Transmission well, it should be part of driver training. Or is that just making me sound old and overly opinionated? Well, it is going to end up a lost art one of these Electric, Autonomous days. Driving the Si was fun and a reminder of how good it feels to actually be involved driving a car.
Most of the technical aspects of the car are familiar to anyone looking seriously here. Pretending I know much more than driving it sounds pretentious. It is not a bike and it is almost new, so coming from a Fossil sounds dumb. Reading about the Si on line sounds pretty exciting, almost wanting to do a track day, if it were my car. In the mean time, it gets great fuel mileage, is extremely comfortable, a hoot to drive and once again, Honda reliable. There is a JT Takeda Cold Air Intake System replacing the stock air cleaner which along with the VETC Honda system make for mechanical music as the motor spins up.
