This 1991 Jeep Wrangler follows the same pattern of our local hot rod builder, “Dave’s” other builds, being a perfect expression of function followed by form. Owning a body shop with decades of building projects, Dave set about building the perfect “Rogue Valley” crawler for his specific needs, getting the job done and bringing him without effort.
The build started with a 1991 Wrangler “Peaches”, as Dave is called around the shop, located that had been towed behind a motor home before ending up in a fender bender. The insurance company saw the wisdom of calling it a total and “Peaches” saw the perfect platform to build his Jeep without having to compromise his vision.
The drive train is a good spot to start. The rear Axle is a Ford Explorer 8.8 equipped with Disk Brakes. A Super Alloy Axle Kit was installed to bring the width to correct proportions along with a set of 4:11 Gears. An ARB Air Locker was installed and plumbed covered by a Heavy Duty Rear Cover.
The front Axle was geared the same with Alloy Axles and an ARB Air Locker installed. Water proof Front Axle Seals were added along with JKS Sway Bar Disconnects. Bilstein Shocks were then added to all four corners.
REEL Driveshaft assemblies were installed front and rear with Slip Yoke Eliminators on both ends. The stock 4.0 Liter 6 had new motor mounts, an inch taller, installed to get a little bit more room under it. A custom Armored Oil Pan was installed along with a substantial Skid Plate under the Trans and Transfer Case. There is Genright Guard under the Gas Tank. A Rough Country 4” Lift was installed with almost everything reconditioned as needed.
Genright Medal Fenders were installed along with a supporting Roof Rack and Basket capable of handling what ever you need to haul in without flexing. A Smitty Built Rear Bumper was bolted on but up front, a custom Winch Bumper was fabricated according to Dave’s design.
Inside a full Roll Cage was added to the stock Jeep bars and is stout. There is a Tuffy Security Box on the console along with interior controls for operating the winch. “Peaches” ran it through the body shop to smooth out any bumps and painted it. New tires were installed this winter and show almost no use. I drove it around town for a bit and was surprised at how tight it felt and the way it drove. For having this sized tires and the front Drag Link disconnected, the way the Transmission, Brakes and Engine made it almost feel stock. Not quite, but close.
