A neighbor called last month to ask about a Porsche her recently deceased husband had in storage behind his old office building. Apparently it was something he was going to restore when he retired. But she had no information beyond that and needed help finding it a new home.

Getting the garage door opened uncovered a 1975 Porsche 914 2.0 that had a thick layer of dust and cob webs on it. Tags expired 2011 and the tires were all flat. Two hours of moving boxes and airing tires it was on a trailer headed back to the shop with a cloud of dust following it.

First thing checked was the fuel tank which was bone dry and with no odor at all. Second thing was changing all of the fluids before installing a new battery and being careful for sparks when hooking it up. The battery tray was rusty as you can see in the image. The floor under the driver’s seat also has some rust perforations.

A bit of cranking and the engine fired up with no smoke from the tail pipe. It ran rough, so plugs and wires were replaced. It made no difference but the more the car was driven, the better the idle and off idle became. The brakes drag and the rotors have seen better days. A new set of front rotors was in the front truck area and are included with the car.

The paint is not great. It was an all right repaint in the day and the best thing you can say about it now is that it all the same color and mostly smooth. The transmission worked fine in the few miles I drove it due to the cracked and splitting sidewalls on the 2008 dated tires. A stock set of rims came with the car which are included. The headlights go up and down but the odometer is not working so it is impossible to know the actual mileage.

The 914 is a runner, needs tires, some minor electrical items sorted out and the brakes attended too. Paint is a 20 footer. The floor pan and battery tray have some rust but the car has great bones and it is a 2 liter!! Replace the tires, resolve the brake issue, rebuild the Weber’s and my guess, you would have a car that can be driven like it was intended to be.
