1972 Citroen Ami 8

This is a 1972 Citroen Ami 8 that was manufactured in Argentina and imported to the US recently. It has a clear and clean Oregon title, plates and registration.

Since 18 I have had a soft spot for 2CV’s, at one time living in one for a month while I drove it to Nordkaap, Norway in the winter of late November. That was a much better idea then doing it. I have fallen back into that memory flashback experience of 2CV’s several times only to be reminded of how small they are inside and anemic in acceleration. In the Ami 8, I saw the illusion of space and quickly purged my memory of anemic and a tight pedal box. I have been on the look out for an Ami for years and when one appeared on Facebook Market Place I quickly set out to make my purchase, wallet in heart!

To say the seller embellished the condition of the car is an understatement. Being it was winter, I was able to address the issues that prevented the Ami from being road worthy in the shop with a heater going and nothing to do outside to distract me. Wiring was sorted out, services were completed and a general clean up of the Ami brought to the great cosmetic condition you see in the images. New tires, new axle boots, new fluids, all of the items a hobby garage mechanic like my self can accomplish.

There is absolutely no rust on the body and I did not see any impact damage anywhere. The repaint is what I would call a strong 5 footer. There are some solvent pops on the rear fenders and touch up’s in the paint but it has a great shine and the body is straight. Masking of windows is on a scale of about 8 out of 10. You can see a couple of areas around the windows that show it was painted. The muffler does have a couple of perforations on the bottom that can be seen in the images. There are two mechanical issues that do not prevent the car from being driven but are worth noting. There is a smear of Epoxy on the bottom of the engine on the flywheel end of the crankcase that is shown in the images. Oil is weeping from that area, not enough to cause concern but one that does leave a mark on the driveway. The other item is the way the transmission shifts due to worn syncros or other unknown reasons. Shifts must be done slowly and deliberately, double clutching makes it much more pleasant. It will require practice of the technique allowing it and you to be “one”.

The Ami 8 is insanely “Citroen” adorable and beautiful. The axle boots from French Parts Service West in WA are new as are the four Michelin Tires from Coker. All of the lights work as they should. The interior is good except for a split in the rear seat. I believe the front seats are from a later model car but there is a ton of leg room for the front two passengers. As with all older cars the repairs never stop, they just becomes less intrusive issues. I think they refer to this as bonding. The heater cables are not working (a new set is included). The fuel gauge and voltage gage on the dash are not working. Your next best friend will be Kenji at French Parts Service in Normandy Park, WA (206-242-4888).

The greatest virtue of this car is the total absence of rust. NONE!!! The windshield has scratches (as can be seen in the images) from 53 years of use. The rest of these mechanical issues are hopefully within the reach of most of us. I have reached a point of not enjoying working on the car and hopefully what I am describing will not put anyone off who has the passion for all things French.

Why am I selling the car after all of this hard work and grief? Size 14 shoes. I cannot hit the brake pedal without engaging the throttle. Ok, another 60#’s and 54 years is something I did not consider in my rush to own the Ami. Reliving our glorious past experiences is sometimes better done with a photo album instead of facing the physical deterioration of passing time. It is out of my system. On to other projects, like the barn find 1974 BMW R90/6 like I had when new. Let’s hope this memory is not another reminder of what was.
