This 1956 Chevrolet Belair represents 35 years of prized ownership and construction by a couple who were immersed in the Grants Pass Hot Rod community back in the late 80’s. Going through the complete and extensive binder of receipts was like taking a walk down memory lane. The list of local companies that supplied parts and work was the who’s who in Southern Oregon in the day, many of whom I knew and did business with. Sadly most all long gone or out of business. Then there is the photo album from start to finish of the frame off restoration. If a history of car clubbing in Southern Oregon were to be written, this could be a great start.

But the work, the parts that were used, the talented mechanical artists who built the best of the best in the day, all part of when there were 100’s of folks in local car clubs that put on events almost every weekend during spring summer in the 90’s and into the 2000’s. It was a lifestyle, it was part of who you were, who your friends were in a very small town in Southern Oregon.

As mentioned before, the thick binder with every receipt, appraisal, every item that was a part of the build is in plastic sleeves that make up the binder. It was nostalgic looking at the places that work and parts were bought. In fact, Lance Troupe, the interior artist of the day, did the inside leather work in 1990 at his home shop when his wife, Nancy, was watching my infant daughter. I probably saw the car in his shop. Boy was he ever slow!

George and Barbara drove the car for the next 35 years, putting almost 50,000 miles on the Speedometer. The addition of Disk Brakes, a 350 Chevy V-8 and the Turbo 350 made it a great driver for local events or trips to other social events on the West Coast. The Interior is extremely comfortable and the car drives so much better then new. The body work was exceptional. The doors, hood and trunk fit perfectly with absolutely no sag or alignment issue. Looking at the images shows how straight the bodywork is and the underneath shots have no leaks or fluids. Not bad for 35 years. The car is exceptional for it’s interpretation of what a 1956 Belair can be. The quality of the build has held up to the years and mileage it has experienced. It is ready for the next 50,000, for the next Cruiser family to enjoy again.
