Like Jeeps and Land Rovers designed and built before the Landcruiser, it was intended to be used in battle, fire service, ambulance service and countless other industrial and agricultural roles. In regular production for 24 years, the FJ is a legend for its ruggedness as much as its looks. Hundreds of thousands of Landcruiser FJ40s are in use around the world no matter how remote it might be.

The FJ was a Japanese version of the WWII era Jeep dating back to the Korean War. Toyota first launched the FJ40 series in 1960. Official importation to the U.S. started in 1963 and within two years the FJ40 Land Cruiser became the best selling Toyota in the US. Cosmetically the FJ was essentially the same truck when it went out of production in 1983 with minor trim tweaks. It saw a gradual progression of functional improvements and upgrades over the years, shifting from being a bare-bones utility truck to being equipped as a current market SUV 30 years later.

As FJ40s reached the used market it became common for engine swaps by replacing the FJ’s stock 6 with a small block Chevy V-8. The Chevy engine has more power then the Toyota’s six-cylinder (which was essentially a reverse-engineered Chevrolet 235-cid Stovebolt 6 cylinder). This is why Landcruisers today with stock power trains will continue to have increased value, fewer have not been converted.

This 1979 Landcrusier was purchased by a gentleman in 1993. Included with this Landcruiser is the bill of sale showing when it was purchased in 1993 with 37,228 miles. There are receipts for other services over the years, a set of Warn Hubs and the installation of an Auxiliary Gas Tank.

When in his late 80’s, with the passing of his wife, the truck was parked in his garage. He and his son left for a bucket list adventure to Thailand. A few months ago, after a year’s visit, he also passed. His son has returned to settle the estate and is selling the truck.

The paint is original and the truck has been used for its intended purposes. The interior is original and shows no signs of repair or being replaced. The engine is original to the truck as is the drive train. The wheels and tires are aftermarket and the tires maybe aged. It was recently driven from Quincy, California to Grants Pass without an issue. There are visible surface rust areas but no perforation as can be seen in the images and the front bumper is not new by any means. The truck does drive amazing well and can driven just the way it is or it would be a great candidate for restoration as no one has modified it or changed the drive train.
