I got to visit with the owner of this 1954 Ford Mainline Business Coupe at his “Man Cave” where the Coupe was kept when not parading around or being shown in the Park. It was the perfect “Cave”, Fridge, Checker Board Floor, Coke Machine, a Comfy Couch, TV, everything that you would dream of to kick back with your car, relaxing with a Beer or Coke depending upon what time of day it was or your mood. He is in his 80’s and things are changing, down sizing maybe in the future and the car needs to be taken care of.

But he bought it about 10 years ago from the owner in Alabama who left a small note book in the glove box talking about the modifications to the car, even two with paint codes and color chips.

The Mainline Business Coupe was the basest Ford you could buy in the day, it came factory without a back seat so a salesman could pack his products and samples while he traveled. Stock motors were from a 6 to the Y-Block and normally a three on the tree transmission.

It appears that the car was hot rodded in about 1997. The Front Suspension was by Fat Man Fabrications using Ford Granda and Mustang 11 parts. There was a 3” Front Drop using 1975 Granda Caliper Cradles along with Calipers, Rotors, Pads, Bearings and Seals. Ball Joints and Tie Rod Ends were from a 1954-1959 Ford. The Master Brake Cylinder was out of a Mustang 11.

The Rear End was a rebuilt 8” Ford with 10” Brake Drums. The Rear End Ratio is a 2.79. Air Shocks were added to the Rear End along with Possey Springs. The Engine is a 1977 Ford 302 that was rebuilt in the day. It is backed up by a C-4 Automatic that was also gone through at the same time.

The body work included Frenching the Front Head Lights, adding 1963 Oldsmobile Rear Tail Lights. The notes say it was “nosed and decked and shaved, along with a California Grill, the Front Bumpers turned upside down and the rear bumper split and tucked”. The green color code is Du Pont DAR 43816 but the white color code it too hard to read.

I got to drive the car around a bit and it is perfect. It does not have AC or Power Steering, but it looks perfect. It drives nice and all of the mechanical parts are as far away as your local Auto Zone or NAPA store.
