A decade into collecting social security, there have been friends made in the trade that I can count on to either cause a gasp of surprise or a gut wracking laugh at what they bring to the shop for me to present. My buddy Mike, more then most, causes a raised eyebrow almost every time a trailer with one of his treasures rolls down the apron.

And for sure, this tops them all. Accompanying this Model A is a multi-page presentation of when it was offered previously for sale in 2014, with an asking price of $54,000. Knowing I could never do better, I used their write up to give details and a description of the history and the truck.

“This is a 1930 Model A Fire Marshal’s Truck built for the Fire Marshal of Icedale, Pennsylvania. According to history, the truck was specially built of the Fire Marshal of Icedale at a time when speed, reliability and mobility were becoming increasingly important to local fire departments.

Rather than serving simply as a large conventional fire engine, this Model A was designed as a fast-response Fire Marshal’s truck, lighter, more maneuverable capable of getting him and essential firefighting equipment to the scene quickly. In the early 1930’s, Ford ‘s rugged Model A chassis provided an excellent platform for this type of specialized apparatuses, offering dependable mechanicals and greater mobility than many of the larger fire engines of the period.

The truck was reportedly constructed as a competitive firefighting vehicle, reflecting an era when fire companies took tremendous pride in both the performance and appearance of their equipment. It represented the spirit of early fire–service competition and emergency response-combining Ford’s proven Model A engineering with equipment specifically suited to fire- service duty.

Nearly a century later, this 1930 Model A survives as much more than a antique automobile. It is a tangible reminder of the early days of organized firefighting, when equipment was, communities were closely connected to the their fire companies, when a specially built Ford like this could play an important role in protecting a town and it’s residents.”
