Going through the receipts for the 1978 R100RS that we have at the shop took me back to building my own ’81 R100 decades ago. The endless receipts, parts, paint, powder coating and labor to build a /7 to your vision of the perfect R100 was not free and to do it right was a huge commitment of time and money even in the day.

I have a box of receipts for this bike dating back over 20 years of the 22 years the bike has been in the family. That was when the project was started (they never really end…) and the major lifting was done. According to what we have, were told and the receipts in hand, mechanically the bike has been serviced regularly at Hansen’s over the years along with some serious component rebuilds. The Transmission, a 1981 unit, was rebuilt by Shawn Hart at Hansen’s (if you are looking to date yourself) along with the upgraded, 1981 version of the final drive. While the transmission was out, the clutch was replaced and the flywheel lightened. Dave at Hansen’s, several years later, completely rebuilt the upper end less than 3,000 miles ago, replacing the pistons, having the heads rebuilt and replacing the rod bearings. The front end has been refurbished, late model seals and bearings installed as needed. The entire brake system was overhauled, parts rebuilt or replaced as needed along with new EBC Floating Rotors, Stainless Steel Brake Lines and new front brake pads. Regular maintenance recorded with invoices has been continuous from day one until recently.

Now on the part you were waiting for, the suspension, frame and cosmetic work done, that makes this bike like no other on the planet. The stock frame was braced at the steering head area before being cleaned up and powdered coated in Black Pearl. The rear swing arm was also braced on the driveshaft side before being powder coated in the matching color. The wheels were powder coated Silver along with the Valve Covers in “Chrome” Silver, bearings checked and replaced as needed including the steering head.

The gas tank was cleaned and sealed before Kurt Foster, a local legend, now retired, was enlisted for paint and finish. According to the owner of the bike, Kurt and he spent almost a month preparing the body parts before the BMW Metallic Red base coat was applied. Kurt fogged in the black border in the factory pattern before multiple layers of clear were applied with lots of sanding between coats. Both Kurt and the owner lost count of how many, but in all of my years of looking at painted motorcycles, I have never seen a finish so clear, so deep and so flawless as this motorcycle. It is show quality and beyond.

The bike starts instantly, has no signs of blow by or seepage, tires are brand new, fluids recent and the sound coming from the Staintune Exhaust can only be replicated by another BMW Twin, musical to Air Cooled owners. The selling price is $8,495. The VIN # is 6183041. Miles showing are 50,922 and you should assume they are over or not actual.
