2012 BMW R1200 GS Rallye
Grants Pass, Oregon 97526

When the 2012 BMW R1200GS Rallye came out with a price of $18,500 without bags, I was within a breath of buying the sample that was on Hansen’s showroom. My buddy Bill bought it while I was flopping around on the deck trying to decide and it was as though fate had stepped in, or so I thought.
The bike was, and still is, the coolest GS BMW had provided since the R100GS Dakar. The red frame and the aluminum accents just set the bike off, it is almost a shame they were going to get muddy and left out in the rain. Being a 2012, it came with the Twin-Cam engine and latest version of BMW’s ABS and ESA Suspension system. It was the pinnacle of the Oil Cooled model line and in my opinion, the best looking BMW Twin since the HP2. I have been looking over my shoulder since that bike in Hansen’s showroom was sold.
Fast forward five years and I got a bug to find a GS. If it was going to be a GS, it was going to be the 2012 Rallye. I looked on ebay, Craig’s List and found them going for silly money around the country. I gave up again until checking CL in Medford, I found one locally. About three hours later I was an owner. The bike came equipped with the standard features, Heated Grips, ABS, ESA and a set of BMW’s expanding Vario-Bags and Trunk. The bike was cosmetically gorgeous but needed tires and minor service which I took care of immediately.
Fast forward again and a trip to BC was on the calendar. The right wrist started giving me grief after about 100 miles which I knew was going to gum up the works. A 2014 GS with cruise was on the floor and a choice had to be made, reality or indulgence. The 2014 does not hold a candle to the Rallye when it comes to desire, but as tool for my declining capacities it will serve the purpose.
So, the Rallye is for sale. No use crying over spilt milk. For someone who knows how special the bike is I hope they have the chance to hold on to it longer than I did. I will probably be looking over my shoulder in a couple of years again….
