I was doing research on the differences between the RS and RT and found that they sold new for almost $15,000! Ouch, that is a long fall from top of the heap in value. RS riders, it seems, were a demanding group of enthusiasts, they wanted all of the capacity of the RT with less of the pushing a sheet of plywood presentation the upright riding position and tall windscreen provided. Not only that, the extra body work raised the center of gravity and loaded the front end with a bit of extra weight that some preferred not to deal with. There was a difference that some riders knew, others did not care about, but that added to the handling and riding experience of assertive street riders spending more of their time on secondary roads than interstates. And so we have the core reason for the RS’s being build by BMW in different guises for the past forty years, riding Enthusiasts.

The R1100’s were the first of the “Oil-Heads” versions of the new design and was a giant leap for BMW touring. Of course it had Headed Grips and ABS Brakes but it also featured an electronically adjustable Windscreen and Fuel Injection. These were the first of the bikes to have the Telelever Front Suspension designed as an anti-dive fixture and Paralever anti-squat rear suspension. The motorcycle was the first expression of the modern BMW Twin, most of these features being offered still today as standard with obvious refinement over the next following models.

We have had a number of R1100’s in this year and this bike follows in the pattern of the others passing through the doors. It is has just been extensively serviced by Hansen’s BMW in Medford, Oregon. Within the past 1,000 miles, it has had new tires installed front and rear, all fluids changed (including engine, transmission, rear end, front and rear brakes and clutch) and a complete safety inspection done. The bike is ready to travel, once again it only needs a direction chosen, fuel and the time to do the “Grand Road Trip” or a trip to the coast for the afternoon.

With 69,816 miles on the clock, it is “Just broken in” as Craig Hansen likes to tell it. Cosmetically, it is in good order, showing a few marks from it’s previous adventures but no evidence of anything dramatic or serious over the years.

Miles again are 69,845 and the VIN# WB10416 A3YZC60443. The selling price is $3,295. For other interesting bikes and collectIble vehicles, visit our web site http://www.automaniagp.com 541 479 8888 or come by and see us at 895 SE Gladiola Drive, Grants Pass, Oregon, 97526. Oregon Dealer DA1287.
