1978 BMW R100/7 with Hitchhiker Sidecar
Price: $3.895 USD - PREVIOUSLY SOLD
We got a call to look at two old BMW motorcycles that had not been run for awhile. One of them was one was this 1978 R100 with a Sidecar attached. My first glance caught two items, the 15” car sized rims and the /2 Earls Fork front parts. A little deeper and the twin plugged Heads and the Paioli Shocks all the way around. Next was the separate mechanical brake lever for the sidecar wheel and the welded bosses to the /7 frame for the upper hack mounts.
The setup had been parked about 10 years ago in their shop and not moved or fussed with during the interval. The bike had been built by a Texas BMW shop over twenty years ago and at the time, it was all state of the art /7 modifications. We have come a long way since, but it is a period build and I have never seen a similar set up. The Chair is a Hitchhiker brand that maybe their narrow model.
There was no mention of it running in recent years, but the engine turns over and has compression, the gear box allowed me to put it in first so it was not rolling away. The front brake worked and it appears to be wearing original paint on the tank or a very good repaint many years ago. I really do not have much more to add, but if you need any visual inspection done, please do not hesitate to email or call. It needs complete refurbishing, it will not drive to my knowledge the way it sits. We were given 3 “new” tires for it, but they maybe too old to be usable. Next owner’s call.
The bike needs everything, but it is more than worth the effort, time and expense if you have a passion for Air-Head BMW’s, especially odd ball ones that you will not see at the next BMW Rallye.
