BMW R65’s were an interesting model in the BMW air-cooler range. This was an attempt to build a mid-size bike using parts bin engineering from the /7 range of bikes being built in the day. Basically a /7 frame and drivetrain with smaller jugs, a shorter rear swing arm and rear sub frame, supported by shorter forks and 18 inch wheels, the bike gave the bike a lower seat height and 50hp instead of 70hp found in the R100RT. The idea was to attract the shorter inseam customers that found the /7 bikes to tall or bulky without the “intimating” power of the bigger bikes.

Our bike is a 1982 version and pretty much stock as it came from Munich in the day. Stock mufflers and bodywork are in good order as is the seat. The engine sounds great, just like all of the twins of that day, but the bike is much lower to the ground for shorter riders looking to be part of the cars and coffee gatherings going on these days or to be doing some long distance touring like it used to happen, without huge power and tons of electronic aids. Hard bags and mounting hardware come with the bike, but it is going to take a bit to sort out the parts and pieces.
