1975 Norton 850 Commando
Grants Pass, Oregon 97526

This 1975 Norton Commando has been part of the rolling collection since 2002 when I bought it from a seller in Louisiana, who swore the bike had been completely restored. Since High School, I have lusted after the sound of a Norton and had sworn I would one someday. It arrived in Grants Pass and it was cosmetically in very nice condition. As soon as I rode it though, it leaked oil from the upper end, enough that it had to be sorted out. This is not overly complicated and once it was sealed up, I rode the bike occasionally.

After 14 years, I have managed to put a total of 177 miles on the clock. Most of the time the bike has been in the window here at the shop. I never got the energy up to ride it and it collected dust and comments from anyone who came by the store. The other day, it dawned on me that I was being pretty selfish. I was not riding the bike and no one else was getting the chance too either. It was time.

When I parked it back in 2004, I drained the fuel and pulled the battery out. When the decision to sell the bike was made, we rolled the bike back to the shop, installed a new battery, added non-ethanol fuel to the tank and open the fuel petcocks. Three kicks later, it started. Now before you start saying “Baloney”, Paul was there and he is my witness. Started right away and idles beautifully when warmed up.

I drove the bike around a bit and everything is working. There are some rubber parts that need to be replaced and the tires are at least 14 years old. The starter is not wired in, but then I always referred to the bike as a Norton 850 Commando Electric Assist. To start the bike, you push the starter button and start kicking. It seems like the right thing to do to include a new set of tires with the bike and I will entertain that when the bike sells.

The selling price is $8,995. Miles are 16,336 and VIN# 329371. For other interesting bikes and collectible vehicles, visit our web site http://www.automaniagp.com 541 479 8888 or come by and see us at 895 SE Gladiola Drive, Grants Pass, Oregon, 97526. Oregon Dealer DA1287.
