The Suzuki Hayabusa has always been the accepted gold standard of ultimate top end speed amongst current production, road going motorcycles. It was big, it was fast and managed to top 200mph out of the crate till they dumbed it down to a electronically limited 185mph (somehow, 15mph does not really make the sort of impact I would imagine if you were parting with the bike at those speeds, it is going to a very bad day anyway) but they did it to appease the nannies out there who regulate the motorcycle industry.
In 2003 Suzuki did a concept Naked Bike based on the Hayabusa, all of that motor with minimal bodywork and hardware. It was a hit. In 2007 Suzuki put it into production, the B-King. Scared a bunch of people I am sure, but it rapidly developed a cult following that exists even today.
It was based around 1340cc of Liquid Cooled Inline-Four directly out of the Hayabusa with minor changes to the airbox and exhaust. The B-King is also outfitted with Suzuki’s proprietary drive mode selector (S-DMS) which allows the rider to modify power output by choosing from one of two modes. By default the bike is in full-power ‘A’ mode, but all it takes is a simple push of a button mounted on top of the gas tank, (while the bike is at a stand-still, in neutral) and the rider can select ‘B’ mode which dramatically mellows its power delivery. The system works well and can allow a rider of less experience to have a more controllable ride. For thrill junkies though, ‘A’ mode is all you’ll ever see.
Referred to as “The Big Stick”, the bike weighted in at a bit over 500#’s, it was a predictable handling bike and was reported stable once set in a corner. Look to where you want to be and hold on! Media tests at the time were running 9.93 second Quarter miles. Mind numbing.
