2018 Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled

350 miles from new. Great way to start the description of this 2018 Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled, but that is the most striking thing about the bike, regardless of what model or make it is. It is almost brand new.
The Scrambler line of Ducati was such a big event when it first arrived that there was even talk of separate dealers for the specific line. That quickly evaporated but it does speak to what Ducati was reaching for, basic motorcycles that did not require a FIM License to operate and a Bill Gate’s pocket book to maintain.
The Desert Sled took the basic Scrambler and reinforced the frame, the front forks, rear shock, lengthened the rear swing arm for more than two inches of additonal travel than the stock model. The added wire wheels and a 19-inch front wheel with Pirelli Scorpion Dual-Sport tires to the mix and what they got was a truly basic motorcycle, easy to live with and some potential for off road use. No more a stretch than 600 pound BMW GS’s being considered dual-sports.
The 800cc Air Cooled Twin dispenses with the complication of Water Cooling and the attending Hardware. Taking the bike down the street really drove home how easy the bike is to ride, how simple the task of jumping on and riding off was. It is uncomplicated motorcycling, a bike that would be great around town or off to the coast for the day. The riding position is upright and the seat not too bad. No sore necks after a 100 mile day. It brings home all of the things I like about motorcycling on a daily basis, the lack of complication and interference with the process of just riding.
