When this 2008 Porsche 997 911 Convertible rolled in, the first thing I noticed was the “Fried Egg” headlight look was gone. I know it appears that I was the last one know it had changed, but it really is a huge improvement. The second thing, after driving it for the day, was how great it drove, how strong the motor was and how incredible the Sound system was. It is amazing!

The model was basically a refined version of the previous 996’s without major changes, just improvements cosmetically, a little more power and a move to 18” wheels as standard. On our convertible, the Tip-Tronic Automatic was ordered instead of the Manual, a benefit to those who commute their car in traffic during the week while waiting for the weekend. Flogging a Stick in traffic can get old pretty quickly, possibly blunting the choice of owning a Sports Car for a daily driver. The original 997 first was released as a convertible, the coupe followed shortly after and it is how Porsche first designed the car, as a convertible. It is incredibly solid and inspiring to drive, even with it being topless.

But then there have been issues with the engine over the years. The IMS Bearing and apparently scuffing of the pistons and cylinders have both been serious and terminal problems at times. In our case, upon inspection, the engine was found to have low compression and scuffing of the cylinders and a total rebuild was required. A local shop was sourced for the removal and installation of the engine, but the motor sent to LN Engineering for rebuilding. The four pages of invoices are included on our web page itemizing the $17,832 spent to that task. Because the Pistons and Cylinders were already being replaced, it was decided to upgrade from the 3.8 liter to the 4.0 liter displacement kit for a bit more power with no downside to the increased cc’s. The repair mileage was at 44,623, slightly less than 2,500 miles ago with a total of 47,026 on the car today.

There is a warranty, given by Aaron’s Autowerks, on the completed work is 24/months or 24,000 miles, which ever comes first.

Being aware that Porsche buyers are very particular, we spent some time going over the body of the car, top and bottom looking for repair work or other issues. Looking carefully, we did note the front hood had been repainted at one time. It has a Clear Bra installed on the front which seems to have done it’s job well. The interior of the car is in very good order and it was a pleasure to drive for the brief time allowed.

The car has just come from Aaron’s Autowerks and we believe the car to be in great mechanical and cosmetic condition. We have included images top and bottom and a copy of the work orders for the engine. The new owner will have a well sorted car as it was suppose to be new, with years of enjoyment ahead.
