This beautiful 1937 Chevy Coupe, owned for the past 17 years by a die in the wool Hot Rodder, is being offered for sale with huge regrets by its owner. Driving a Hot Rods takes more attention then a Toyota Avalon and time does march on for all of us, the effort is now greater then the pleasure of ownership.

The car was found as a finished show car in Visalia when it was bought by it’s present owner and kept in Southern California the following years. The next decade it was used when time allowed for travel to events up and down the West Coast as a form of relaxation and distraction from incredibly stressful work. Part of the pleasure was changing different aspects of the car, fine tuning the excellence of the car with upgrades to the drivetrain and interior as time and budget allowed. After 17 years, it is absolutely beautiful both cosmetically and mechanically. Sometimes the problem is what to do next when everything has been done on a wish list. Often times finished projects get sold and new adventures started but in this case it is the end of a decade’s old hobby.

The car is all steel, including the fenders and running boards. The tops of the running boards were “glassed” over for a smooth finish but there are no signs of rust or impact repair on top or beneath the car. The Chassis is the modified ’37 Chevrolet item, changed to accept the modern drivetrains and Mustang Front Suspension, all beautifully refinished.

The Drivetrain was extensively replaced or reconditioned with a rebuilt 700-R4 Automatic Transmission installed behind the 350 Chevrolet Small Block now equipped with Aluminum Elelbrock E-Street Heads, Iskenderian 270 Mega Cam, Roller Rocker Arms, Medium Rise Aluminum Intake Manifold, Holley Carburetor, Samson Headers, MSD Ignition Module and dressed to the Tee’s with a RAB Billet Pulley System. As an Audio bonus, Abe installed remotely controlled exhaust Cut Outs for rocking glass window panes as he drove past on Cruise Nights. The rear Axle is a Ford 8” with 4.11 Gears and a Trac Lock Pumpkin. Brakes were upgraded to a full Wilwood System including Master Brake Cylinder, Four Rotors, Calipers and Aluminum Front Hubs. And about the Brakes, they are incredible.

The interior was great when the car was first purchased but needed to be more of what the buyer had in mind so it was completely reskinned. A few years later, the regret of not using Leather for the refresh the first go around had the whole interior done once again, along with having entire interior lined in Dynamat. The final upgrade to the inside was an Ididit Tilt Steering Column. It is so inviting and comfortable it is hard to imagine it being a one off custom Hot Rod. Obviously it has Power Steering, incredible Power Brakes and the absolute necessity to keep the peace at home, Air Conditioning. Abe is very proud of the working alarm system (needed new batteries).

Driving the car to take images was an eye opener. A lot of builds, even great builds, are tiring to drive. They suffer an unfinished quirk or three that never lets you relax while going down the road. But here, were no distractions from the car, it could have been a mid-eighties Mid-Size Sedan. It drove easily, no bump steer, no rattles and did I mention the brakes? The engine ran perfectly, the transmission seamlessly despite the owner mentioning a programming issue that needs sorting.

Look at the images shot from under the car, you can see the quality of the work and how well the car has been maintained over the years. The paint is still unbelievable with a few extremely minor signs of it’s 20 years. Looking around the Internet, this car is so more presentable and is now being offered priced less then cars with less character and quality.
