Our long time customer brought this 1940 Ford Delux Coupe, powered by a 1953 Blown Mercury Flathead V-8, by when he first bought it and my first impression was that it was a really cool looking car. It had a great stance, the paint was beautiful and it had the “Look” that most customs only strive for. The interior was a bit dated but when he opened the engine hood, everything else disappeared.

Once I was able to comprehend the expanse of polished aluminum and Mercury Flathead, the only words I could fathom were “Engine Candy”. If someone truly loves mechanical objects and has become jaded by plastic covers that adorn modern cars engine compartments, this engine (and radial airplane motors) is in another stratosphere of mechanical beauty.

Some of the highlights of the motor parts are the Baron Racing Equipment Heads and Cross over Pipes, Fenton Exhaust Manifolds, Potvin Super ¾ Cam, a Dual Demon Carburetor Setup sitting on top of a S.C.O.T. Supercharger from H&H Flatheads. The rest you are going to have to identify from the images we took of the engine compartment. Obviously, a lot of research and thinking went into the design. The rear axle is an 8” Ford with a 3.57. The front brake calipers are mid-80’s GM and the transmission is a 5-Speed.

The car came with two binders of receipts, an engine builder’s manual, even a binder with a collection of show event plagues, dating back to 1991. There is even the purchase order of when the car sold in 2005 for $60,000 (including rebuilding the transmission) to a previous owner. That year, the engine front crank seal was repalced. The serious receipts start back in 2005 and it is typical of an enthusiastic owner showering their steed with spending abandonment that leaves the rest of us staring in wonder. Summit Racing probably named a new shipping department after the owner after all of the parts he bought. An estimate is up to 100 individual receipts in fourteen years, most likely a return of 30 cents on the dollar if that.

Another binder has several wiring looms drawn out and a compression test done 04/25/2019. The readings are 80#, 100#, 100#, 95#, 100#, 105#, 105# and 100#. Between the four books, you will have hours of research and answers to work completed and parts installed. It is one of the most complete build books I have seen.

Which brings us to the current owner who been looking for a 1940 Ford Delux Coupe for years. He had shown us some of the cars out there and it was flabbergasting what was being represented as good and for insane values. He drove all over the west coast looking at cars being disappointed until I found this particular car from another dealer.

As soon as the ink had dried on his check, the car was surveyed for any and all needs. All of the oils were changed and while flushing the brakes, it was found that the master brake cylinder needed replacement. At the same time, all of the brakes, including the emergency brake, were adjusted. A neutral safety switch was installed so it could not start without the clutch depressed to prevent any starting accidents. A new Radiator ($850) was installed along with a thermostatically operated electric fan assembly and some minor wiring issues attended too. As I mentioned, the interior was dated, so the car was delivered to Greg’s Upholstery where $6,500 later it was beautifully finished in black leather with the attention to detail Greg’s is well known for and you can see in the images. The clock has been out being repaired for two months, but should be in the car shortly and working.

Life brings sudden changes and what seemed forever has turned into a hard turn left and the car is being sold to resolve issues.
