Our second El Camino of the year, about as far away in content as you can get as is possible and stills the same brand and model of car. This 1964 El Camino is everything that our 1965 6-Cylinder, 3-Speed complained it was not. It has a 454 Big Block, 4-Speed Hurst Shifter and AC. And best of all, there is no rust under the floors or behind the rear window. For those of you who called on the ’65 and complained about the drivetrain, this one makes up for it in spades.

The car has been owned for five years by its owner and was bought as a finished long term project here in Southern Oregon. Being aware of common rust issues these cars suffer, the first thing we did was to put the car on the hoist and look under at the floor area of the passenger compartment. Not a sign of anything, no rust and no previous repairs to the panels as you can see in the images. Paint is about ten years old and is in excellent shape, I did not see a marks or scratches. The underside is in good shape, the car has obviously been driven but there is no rust or corrosion. The bed is as good as the body, no scratches or marks. The interior was redone about the same time and is in great shape, even the spare has a cover on it.

The big story here is the engine, transmission and rear end. I scanned the build sheet and added it to the web page description. The motor is a Big Block 433 cubic inch running a 396 crank, 9:1 Forged Pistons, Edelbrock Performer Aluminum Heads, Edelbrock Performer Intake Manifold which is matched ported to the aluminum Heads. It runs a Comp Cam Extreme Energy-XE268H with Comp Cam Valve Springs. There is a FAST Ez-EFI Fuel Injection System with programmer on top and it does “Carburet” well! There is a Muncie M-20 4-Speed leading to a 12 Bolt 3.31 Positraction Rear End. After all of that, it is still running the stock drum brakes all the way around. Again, I scanned the build sheets and added it to the description. There is a Powermaster Starter to cope with all of this massive motor. Stock Air Conditioning is in place with a new Hitachi Compressor. Along with the car is a almost brand new Edelbrock 4-Barrel Carburetor, boxes of spare parts and a car cover.

How does it drive? Well, if your aim is not fuel mileage it is a great. The motor runs strong, the tranny shifts perfectly and the Posi rear end makes for straight line fun. This is so much better than when they were new. I would have to say this is one the nicest El Caminos I have had the chance to experience.
