There seems to be an increase in interest in older domestic Pickups that has been building steam the past few years. The problem is that most of the trucks from the 50’s and 60’s are either worn to within a inch of the scrap pile or have been modified to the point of not recognizing what they might have been 60 or 70 years ago. Finding a truck with good bones that is complete and basically original should be a gold mine of sorts. Most times it takes time and money to make things right even when a rig is complete. You may not be looking for parts, but instead, are doing massive amounts of work to make things straight or replace rusted panels.

In terms of what makes this truck more interesting than other models is the greatest single change to the F-100 range which was the debut of a factory-built 4x4, replacing earlier Marmon-Herrington conversions of larger-capacity Ford trucks that had been only available since the 1930s. This was the true beginning of Ford 4WD of which we take for so granted.

And that brings me to this 1962 Ford F100 Factory 4X4 Long Bed with its 4-Speed Transmission and 2-Speed Transfer-Case. It is not new, it has been repainted, but all of the major parts that made up the truck from the Ford factory are still in place. There are bumps and surface corrosion, but the body is remarkably sound and straight. It would appear that it is the original 272 FE Y-Block engine topped by the factory Holley 2-Barrel Carburetor with the stock exhaust manifold still in place. You can see by the under carriage images there is no serious damage or corrosion to the underside, a lot of grime but no perforations. In the glove box was a factory owner’s manual and a note book dating back to 1984 with every penny spent on it until 1991.

This is what was called a Custom Cab but you may notice the bed and cab do not have matching body lines. Ford had in inventory thousands of previously designed and manufactured beds that they matted to the new rounded cabs for the first few years of production until they were used up. An interesting side note.

The truck drives and stops, probably not as well when it was new, but everything worked mechanically. The driver’s side window does not crank up and down but all of the parts are still in place. There is work to be done to make this an everyday driver but nothing is beyond the reach of a hobby mechanic or someone with mechanical passion. Please look at the images for a better idea of what is being offered.
