I am asked frequently why many of the bikes and cars we consign have the low miles they do. Obviously it starts with the vehicle not being driven, adding miles that normal use would bring. The other factor is the hesitancy of owners to engage with the general public. It is easier to let a car or bike sit then deal with potential issues that could arise finding a buyer. Discovering Automania LLC alleviates the second issue, we do what others do not want to. We present the vehicle with the thicken skin of forty years of doing just that, dealing with the public, 99.9% who are wonderful to met and work with. It is that .01% everyone seems to want to avoid and everyone seems to dread. It is why we exist.

And on to the one owner, 1988 BMW M6 e24 with 38,272 miles from new. As you can see from the dealer invoice in our images, the car was bought new in Ontario, California at Savage BMW Inc. The owner had taken over a family business that was on the down swing of economic health several years earlier and by 1988 had turned things around with serious success and at great sacrifice. As symbolic reward that year, he purchased the car new and proceeded to use it on the weekends as a method of escape and release, taking mostly trips to the beach around LA and back before plugging back into the grind on Mondays. A move to Southern Oregon in 1994 had the car spending most of it’s time on a storage lift, with about 7,000 miles added to the total since that time. During the period, if you recall back then, there was little interest in older BMW’s, the value was not worth the hassle of selling and so it sat.

Service receipts are not totally complete but show the car was serviced at Savage on 03/01/1989 at 1,173 miles, and again stamped in 5/21/1991 at 13,385. I would have to assume someone forgot to stamp the book for anything in between. On 08/22/2001 Lithia BMW did a through service including a radiator flush at 31,716 miles. On 07/03-2002 Lithia replaced the rear self leveling shock absorbers with non-adjusting units as they needed rebuilding (the self leveling shocks that were removed are included with the car). On 04/02/2008 Lithia did an ignition tune up, replaced the rubber fuel lines in the engine compartment and completed an oil and filter change, all at 36,003 miles. On 02/09/2011 Medford BMW did another oil change and flushed the radiator and cooling system. All four calipers, rotors and pads were replaced, everything at 37,001 miles. It was noted that the under hood insulating pad was starting to become loose. 06/27/2013 Star Automotive replaced two Impulse Senders, the Master Brake Cylinder, fuel filter, front hood struts and once again flushed the radiator at 37,511 miles. 07/11/2016, Aarons Autowerks replaced the AC Compressor, Receiver Dryer, four rubber brake line hoses, fuel filter both Rear Control Arms bushings, the Pinion Shaft Seal and recommend new tires with the car showing 37,817 miles.

As it became extremely difficult to find the stock Metric Michelins, aftermarket wheels and tires were purchased which the car sits on. The stock wheels and tires (older and possibly unsafe to use) are included with the sale of the car. The chrome on the stock wheels is pitted, as can be seen in the images, my assumption is they will need to be rechromed to look new once again. There are also floor mats, still in a box, as can be seen in the images.

And so why now? The company is being sold, retirement is just around the corner and decades of collecting takes up a lot of room. And the value of these once neglected cars has climbed ever higher. No longer just a used car, but a desirable, original condition BMW without any body damage or repaint. There are marks from use, brushed touched in the moment, but there is no rust or signs of any impact other than some minor marks underneath the car on the exhaust system. The rear muffler is starting retreat to mother earth and should be replaced eventually.

I drove the car briefly and it is a time warp. The engine was smooth and strong, the transmission perfect going through all gears, including downshifting into first while rolling. There is a missing small plastic cover on the driver’s side pillar, a rubber gasket on the driver’s door is missing a section, but other than those minor and easily resolvable issues, it is absolutely amazing to see how original the car is today.
