1930 Ford Model A V8 Hemi Coupe

This 1930 Ford Model A Hemi comes from a collector who purchased the car as you see it about four years ago. Along with the video inspection done by Dave Hamilton at the bottom of the website images, what I can piece together comes only from two large stacks of receipts that accompany the car. I have not met the builder or know more than what has been presented to me.

Going through the packet of receipts is a bit like doing an archeological dig, each receipt has little to offer, but combined gives an over view of the car through the years starting in about 1998. Included are Oregon Registrations dating back to 1972 in Dayton Oregon. Most of the serious work started in about 2015 with copious record keeping of every cent spent by the owner and the fabrication shops that helped him along the way. All of the work seems to have been done in the Portland-Salem part of the state. A serious sorting of all the paperwork will give quite the history and examination of the build. I will leave that for the new owner. What I did find that the builder of the car was Tom Schiebel from the Boring, Oregon area.

The oldest receipt I found was dated 1998 and is for a 32 radiator shell. The next oldest receipt is from Wescott’s Auto Restyling in Boring, Oregon for replacement Model A body parts dated 06/10/2001 (parts were a lot cheaper in the day). There is an impressive stack of NAPA receipts for mechanical parts, at least fifty that cover the years until 2017.

The drivetrain of the car is a Desoto 270 Hemi attached to 4-Speed Manual Transmission followed up by a Halibrand Quick Change Rear End. I did not see any records on work done to any of the components but they all work as expected in the short drives I have made. What I did notice is that you are chasing the steering when it goes down the road, there is a bit of slop in the steering gear assembly. I am not sure where but it does get your attention when getting down the street. Brakes were good, motor wonderful, clutch smooth and predictable, there was nothing that stood out except the steering.

I had Dave Hamilton do a once over on the car here at the shop and it maybe useful to listen to his observations about the build during the video I shot and attached on our webpage. Dave has built about five of these Hemi Model A’s and is familiar with the nuts and bolts of what it takes to build a good car.

The car has a great presence, from the Hemi topped by the Log Style Intake Manifold and Dual Four Barrel Carbs, to the accomplished bodywork and chased by that great Quick Change Rear End. It is going to be the first car people turn to when it parks no matter what else is near by. A great car, a reasonable value and a timeless example of Hot Roding in our country.
