Southern Oregon is the home for many cottage industry Hot Rod builders, guys who work from their home turning out quality and high end builds for private owners. Some are here for a year, others have been around for decades. One of our customers, Larry, is one of these long term local builders, someone who has turned out incredible custom builds for private parties up and down the West Coast. Over the years, parts accumulated from all these builds; engines, axles and more. One cold winter about 4 years ago, Larry decided to clean shop and a shop truck was born from the pile, combining into a great presentation of a truck no one has ever seen before that hauled parts and shop supplies.

The start of the build was the front firewall of a 1927 Model T. Actually it is one of the only parts that was not hand fabricated during the build. The Cab was stretched 6 inches in length over stock to accommodate our modern sizes. The Top was then chopped the same, 6 inches. The rest of the Cab, behind the doors was custom built by Larry including the Roof, Back wall and Window Openings. The Bed was then hand fabricated along with the tricked out Tail Gate. The Radiator Surround was shaped and shortened with a Walker Radiator installed. The interior was completed by Greg’s Upholstery here in Grants Pass and is really very pleasant to sit in. Classic Instruments were bought new, not everything was from the discard pile!

The Chassis was again custom fabricated allowing a 1937 Ford Front End to be bolted up in front and a Chevrolet S10 Rear Axle assembly in back. Front Brakes are Speedway Disk Brakes, directed by a Corvair Reversed Steering Box (also from Speedway). The Chevrolet Engine is a 350 backed on to a Turbo 400 Automatic that came out of a donor car never used for its intended purpose. The head lights are B-L-C 682-J’s and are a perfect fit.

Larry is one of the better body and painters in the area and he did not let anything get by. Don Tippit did the pin stripping and Logo, his usual fine work and the final product was exactly what Larry had in mind for a shop truck when this all started. 12,000 miles latter, it is time to move on and the truck was brought in.

So there are no secrets here, this thing is a hoot to drive. It made me smile every time I got into it. You can see the front suspension moving, the wheels turn when you move the steering wheel. It is car nut’s CAR! Oh, and the stock 350, long twin rail frames and relatively narrow tires are the perfect answer for every man child who wants to easily overwhelm available traction at any speed.
