We got a call last fall asking us to sell this 2008 Mercedes R-Class R 320 CDI 4MATIC which involved driving the car about 70 miles back to the shop. I am not normally too excited about driving most cars, it quickly changed when I opened the back door to put my jacket in the back seat. It is huge behind the two front seats. Huge and tons of leg room. And there was a third row behind it, all it folding down to make the cargo area massive. Four large adults would be beyond comfortable for any sort of trip, short or long.
Well, I ended up buying the car right away and spent this winter putting about 5,000 miles on it. I have loved driving it. I am 6’2” and about 220, finding anything that fits is a struggle. At the time, I knew little about this model other than the 3.0 Turbo Diesel, AWD and Automatic. We did a family trip to Las Vegas and back and in my opinion, it was one of the most composed and enjoyable drives in my recent history (at slightly over the posted limits). What a perfect car. The way it drives is exceptional, the steering is weighted just right and with the cruise set, the seat adjusted and the steering wheel properly located, it as comfortable a car as I have driven in years. It got 24mpg at 65mph which is great for the all wheel drive and size the 320 offers. Nice driver and winter was so much better with it. I referred to it as the Swiss Army Knife of cars if anyone asked. Recent service has included replacement of the fuel and air filters, crankcase oil and filter change and new serpentine belt.
Until a Jeep Rubicon just came through, one I have been looking at for years. Can’t have both and it is time for the 320 to move over.
