In a time long ago there were at least five Volkswagen’s in the yard, four of them not running which led to being stranded too many times to count and a job at VW repair shop while still in school. Fast forward almost 50 years and I have been cured, but still am able to recognize good bones and a good story when I see it that has to do with an air-cooled car. And here we have one.

This locally bought, one owner, under 83,000 mile Super Beetle rolled into the shop with a story and invoices that made it beyond reasonable to think it was all true. First off was a copy of the original Oregon title issued in 1973. Second are a stack of receipts starting in 1990 with the mileage at 69,973 marked on the invoice and following through the years to 2008 with the miles at 81,535 including an invoice for a complete paint job in 1999 at Ham’s Auto Body in GP. Third was visually inspecting the car to confirm the story we were told. Fourth was driving it. And yes, this is one owner car with those miles on it. The back license plate frame, though sun faded, can be seen to have the name “Jackson Lewis”, the selling Volkswagen Dealer in Grants Pass in 1973.

It gets better. The owners traveled around the country in a motor home with the car in tow. Twice they did a circumvent loop around the whole USA with numerous trips to Portland and beyond, always towing the car. So, just guesstimating, that could lead to at least 20,000 miles or more of being towed. Notice the tow bar mount attached to the front of the pan (we are including the tow bar with the car).

The son of the now deceased owner explained that his dad had always wanted his wife to have a car, but that the wife did not like driving. The car mostly sat in the garage for over 30 years not being used except being towed and when he passed quite awhile ago, it just sat for ten years or more. The gas tank went sour and had to removed for cleaning and resealing. Fuel lines were replaced, and the carburetor needed replacing. Rear brake hydraulics were replaced along with shoes, the fronts have new brake lines and lots of material. The pan is almost perfect except under the battery tray area where it appears it lightly touched something. The front of the pan has the tow bar welded to it. Receipts show the engine rebuilt at 79,999 miles including new pistons and cylinders. The original factory owner’s manual lists the VIN and engine ID number which match the car.

The interior is great with original carpets and headliner in place. The seats have been refurbished with a quality kit and feel great. The engine was out and new compartment seals installed. The front struts have been replaced with KYB units as well as the back KYB shocks. The transmission shifts well, syncros in second are a little edgy but with the miles showing, still great. All of the fluids were just replaced including the brakes, transmission and motor.

The selling price is $11,495, the VIN is 1332331529 and actual miles are 82,107. For other interesting bikes and collectible vehicles, visit our web site http://www.automaniagp.com 541 479 8888 or come by and see us at 895 SE Gladiola Drive, Grants Pass, Oregon, 97526. Oregon Dealer DA1287.
