1973 Volkswagen Thing 181
Grants Pass, Oregon 97526
Price: $5,800 USD - PREVIOUSLY SOLD
Having owned at least 100 Volkswagens in the past 50 years, seeing how original the parts were on this 181 Thing made it easier to see the finished car without the heart ache of running down unobtainium parts that were particular to this model.
It drove to the shop, owned by a retired hobby mechanic that realized it was going to take a lot more time than he had allowed. He bought the car off his neighbor who had parked it 15 years prior and never got around to working on it. Seems almost contagious.
The original parts that caught my eye were the stock muffler and the gas heater in the front. Most of the paint is original, it looks like there was some poor repair work done on the left front corner, but the rest of it looks original. The transmission was replaced, probably out of a standard car, but the original transmission is in the back seat hopefully with the right gear ratio. The CV boots are shot, probably the joints too. The top is gone, but the bows and hardware are in place. The convertible door frames are not in good order, but there are in the back also. There is also the stock carburetor and air cleaner assembly. The rear bumper is not there and someone liked to weld up front. The under coating is peeling everywhere under the car, but I did not see any perforations on the pan or the fenders.
That’s about it. Good bones, needs a complete restoration, but when you are done, it will be as good as it gets. All of the important parts are here and it can be driven now.
Last note. It is titled as a 1977, but the VIN number says it is a 1973. I did not create the title, but that is what it will be sold as. If you want to correct it, take to the DMV and wage the good fight.
